Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century (Full Series!)

It's better than you think.

     Obscure 90's and 2000's cartoons is where it's at. Sherlock Holmes and the 22nd Century existed right in between Mummies Alive and Princess Guinevere and the Jewel Riders in order of relative obscurity. Mummies Alive being the better show, but only marginally. Mighty Max was another show that is not talked about enough, but saw a little more airtime and had a superior intro rock soundtrack that still blows most 35 year old men's vasectomies off, even today. 

A modern whodunnit. 

   Sherlock Holmes, preserved in honey for 200 years is brought back to life, and is joined by a cast of characters to include a fully android Watson who is OP and can hack the planet. The soundtrack was a banger, and animation was better than average for the time. I watched this at 5am when getting ready for high school, waiting for the bus to arrive. This was the only time you could catch these unknown cartoons in Florida, so I would wake up early just for that.

Aeon Flux - Full Series & Notes

     Aeon Flux, part of MTV's late night experiment, starting airing after midnight on the Liquid Television's late night block. If you were lucky enough to have MTV (A paid channel then!) and stayed up, then you were one of the few that got to be amazed. Totally rated R, full violence and gore, and the main character died in some strange way each episode, and seems to be aware that she is prone to dying over and over as evidence in the end of the second short.. Other than music and sound effects, there is no real voice acting going on. This is the first example of dystopian spy fiction that I can think of. Lots of feet licking (tons of licking in general across the series) fet-life worthy porn store vibes in the first episode that aired, which is worth noting I suppose. 

Concept Artwork was rad. 

     Peter Chung worked on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, and was fully involved in the creation and design of C.O.P.S., where you can really seen the design similarities. Rugrats was his design, and has that same gritty art style, but lacks the overall attention to detail and quality of Flux, showing how much he really wanted this to succeed as a passion project. I still have my original DVD compilation I paid over $100 at suncoast motion picture company all those years ago!

The Body Electric (1985) Full TV Movie!

The Body Electric is a rare canadian produced cartoon TV from 1985, directed by David Feiss. There are some really interesting details that set it apart from most animated shows from the time:

1. A rockin' 80's soundtrack by Rush
2. It was broadcast on TV alongside a simulcast in Stereo on FM radio so you could get the best quality audio. This was rarely done.
3. Was discovered again in 2012 by dwellers of the Rush Usenet Group, National Midnight Star
4. Atkinson Film Arts produced.. think The Care Bears and The Raccoons

     The full popularity of canadian/american rock music R rated cartoons hit it's peak with Heavy Metal, Rock & Rule, Fire & Ice and American Pop. This entry was a little late, and super bizarre, but we can celebrate it today by watching it now on youtube. 

Gummi Bears - Season 1, Episode 1

Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears is the real name actually. Super high production values for the first time in in saturday morning history, Disney took a huge risk by increaing the budget.. but it paid off big.

Our scientist have determined through hours of research and development concluding in the statistics now showing Sunday is the best and most requested day for a new Sexy Robot to stimulate the working class just enough to get them through the following workweek.

Unfortunately, our scientist also discovered that the working class is also interested saving time. So, for their sake, and with the help of our lawyers, we have decided to combined two of the three parts for today.

Dungeons & Dragons Revisited

Dungeons & Dragons is an animated television series based on TSR's Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. A co-production of Marvel Productions and TSR, the show was popular in the United States and ran for three seasons on CBS.
The level of violence was controversial for American children's television at the time, and the script of one episode, "The Dragon's Graveyard", was almost shelved because the characters contemplated killing their nemesis, Venger. In 1985, the National Coalition on Television Violence claimed it was the most violent show on network television.

Dragon Warrior - The Cartoon Series (Wtf?)

Dragon Warrior is a crazy popular NES games, called Dragon Quest in Japan. Of course there was a cartoon series aired briefly in america based on a popular manga by the same name! For shame.

Toned waaaay back for american audiences and labled G, the show bombed in america and no one really watched it. For NES players like myself, this show ranked right up there with Super Mario Bros. Super show, and The Legend of Zelda Cartoon. Oh, and when i mean toned back, check out the Japanese Intro: (Did i see brains and ass?)

Obscure Cartoo.. Bravestarr!

I'm not going to lie, Bravestarr is a badass cartoon. Super futuristic cowboys with lazers blow shit up, save lives, the world, and always laugh at the end of every episode. One episode in particular, a bit character get hooked on a drug called "Spin", gets fucked up and addicted, and dies. Yes overdoses and dies right there on the spot. Like most Filmation cartoons of note, there is a lesson to be learned at the each episode, and in Bravestarr, it's don't get fuck with "Spin."

The trailer is obviously badass, and like most Filmation shows that never made it, way over funded and excellent animation.

All the characters in the show can channel their "Spirit Animal" and turn loose a whole fuckload of hell upon their enemies. Their mounts, or sidekicks, are horses that can talk, make jokes, and also have tons of special powers. The setting: New Texas. Fuck yeah. Customary Episode:

Obscure Cartoons part whatever - Blackstar

I'm not obscessed. I just like things not alot of people pay attention to. Enter the cartoon Blackstar. I really like this one. (Anything Fantasy really)

This was Filmation's pretty early edition into the Animation marketplace, and it shows. Not bad really, like a watered down Conan, which was very popular at the time. Think Thundarr, and mix in a little bit of the Conan animated series and you have this. Mildly popular in Canada, Blackstarr was the precursor to He-Man, and the smililarities are much too obvious. Just change the title, and it may pass as He-Man. Made in 1981.

People looking for the Powerstar or fuckstar or Porksword or whatever and they need it to fuck shit up. I really can follow this, but it takes 3 Nattie Light tall boys and a luke warm ham and cheese sandwich to process the data so i don't think it's He-Man. As always, here is an episode:

Obscure Cartoons of Awesomeness - The Mighty Orbots

I can't say i watched this when i was kid and that says alot. I was almost glued to the TV until the age of 12, and even then managed to watch pick up shows in syndication before school started.

The Mighty Orbots is a cartoon with, dare i say, remarkable production values and a gigantic budget. For 1983, i don't think i've seen a better cartoon. Obviously Japanese and Anime driven, The Mighty Orbots ran for about 6 months in 1984 on ABC, and then in Japan around the same time. Spanning 13 episodes, it was lost and never aired again. Time to thank Youtube yet again.

Robots are everywhere because Japanese people are obsessed with such things, and Andriods are bad guys, one in particular is some kind of super computer named Shadow. Or the group is named Shadow. Or what the fuck ever. They fight the bastards with their robots and shoot shit. Alot of talking for a cartoon but seriously good, and and stands the test of time. Check out an episode:
